Instructors
Sensei Peter Ingham (2nd Dan KUGB)
Sensei Scott Watson (5th Dan KUGB)
Scott started training at15 at the Halifax Metro Karate Club and after a few years, achieved his 1st Kyu. Before going for his Shodan (first black belt) he gained a place at Liverpool University and moved in September 1989.
Unknown to him, moving to Liverpool was the best move that he could have made in his Karate career. Liverpool is the epicentre of Shotokan Karate in the UK and home of the world renowned Liverpool Red Triangle Karate Club and the head quarters of the Karate Union of Great Britain. Liverpool University was lucky enough to have instructors who had trained at "The Triangle" and provided exceptionally high class Karate tuition. For Scott this was a baptism of fire. The level of Karate in Liverpool, both at the University club and the Red Triangle, was significantly different from what he was used to and he spent a lot of time re-examining the fundamentals of Karate.
In July 1990 Scott cross graded to a 1st Kyu in the KUGB and in March 1991travelled to Bath to take his 1st Dan grading with the late Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda. Scott passed his black belt after a gruelling grading. He went on to regularly compete for the University club and was invited to join the KUGB Northern Region Karate Squad, competing internationally in 1997. Scott continued to train and attained his 3rd Dan in 2009. In 2011 Scott was involved in a serious motorbike accident that meant he had to take a break from training of about 6 years, only coming back to training when he moved back to Yorkshire in 2017. In 2019 Scott achieved his 4th Dan after some very intensive training to get him to the right level. Scott also become a qualified Referee in 2019 and is looking to become an Assessor.
Over the years Scott has had the privilege of training with some of the best instructors in the UK; Sensei's Keinosuke Enoeda, Andy Sherry, Terry O'Neil, Bob Poyton, Frank Brennan, Garry Harford, Jimmy Brennan, Billy Higgins, Matt Price, Nick Heald, John Bruce, Holly Bruce, Ryan Tucker.
Scott now teaches at Sowerby Bridge Shotokan Karate Club and occasionally teaches at Leeds Shotokan alongside Sensei Ryan Tucker and Sensei Caroline McGrath. Below is a brief timeline of Scott's Karate career.
