Welcome to Sowerby Bridge Shotokan Karate Club which is proud to be affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB - www.kugb.org).  At its heart the club looks to foster the true potential within each student.  Karate fosters the spirit of the individual and strives to encourage each student to be the best that they can be.  With diligent training, we aim not only to create an advanced level of physical fitness but also mental fitness with confidence and determination to always do your best.

Training is provided by qualified instructors who have been fully DBS checked.  Both instructors have been training in Shotokan Karate for over 30 years and have attained senior grades.  The instructors bring a deep understanding of the mechanics of Karate, the technical details as well as the discipline and respect.  Having competed at regional, national and international level, this experience will also be used to develop the skills of students.

Sowerby Bridge Shotokan Karate Club is a completely inclusive, non-discriminatory club welcoming all ages, backgrounds and physical abilities, from total beginners to senior grades.

Club Grading
Shotokan Karate Academy

Manchester

Our club grading was held at the Shotokan Karate Academy and was run by the club Chief instructor and senior KUGB instructor, Garry Harford (8th Dan).

These are very unusual circumstances and the grading was well prepared and well organised to meet the strict restrictions put in place due to COVID19.

Aggie and Vic gave a very strong performance and both passed with flying colours.

Well done ladies, you represented yourselves and the club brilliantly!

Club Grading

Shotokan Karate Academy

Manchester

Our club grading was held at the Shotokan Karate Academy and was run by the club Chief instructor and senior KUGB instructor, Garry Harford (8th Dan).

Prior to the grading there was a black and brown belt course and this was attended by several of our senior grades.  This was followed by a Kyu grade course before the grading.

We had two students grading this time.  Poppy Sowden did a really solid grading to get her 8th Kyu (red belt) and is already looking forward to starting training for her yellow belt

Gio, a student from Mytholmyroyd, who has been training over a year now took his first KUGB grading and double graded to to 8th Kyu.  Well done Gio.

It was a great day with all our students representing the club fantastically.  Well done!!!!!

Alex Cockx Course - 28th Feb 2020.JPG

28th February 2020

Advanced Kata & Bunkai

Sensei Alex Cockx (2nd Dan KUGB)

On Friday 28th February we were lucky enough to secure the services of Sensei Alex Cockx from Hale Karate Club.

We were treated a an exceptionally detailed and technical lesson in basics, Nijushiho and the application for the kata.

Alex's attention to detail and raw energy was infectious and everyone who attended left with a deeper understanding of the kata but more importantly a deeper understanding of how they, as individuals, could adapt to ensure their own karate improved.

Everyone who attended the course asked when Alex would be back and we very much hope to host Alex again soon.

Sensei Mike Toze

It is with deep regret that we have to inform all past members of both Sowerby Bridge and Mytholroyd Karate clubs of the recent passing of Sensei Mike Toze of Rochdale.

Sensei Toze had taught at both clubs on a monthly basis for over 40 years and his wisdom and training helped many students achieve their grades.

We are sure that we all have our own stories to tell about his training.

He will be sadly missed.

Our condolences and deepest sympathy goes out to his family.
